Wing plugs resources for mental health, resilience

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah – As the Air Force emphasizes the importance of resilience in recent years, the need to look after one’s mental health has become even clearer as Airmen face the effects of COVID-19 in both their professional and personal lives.

LeeAnn Gossett, the 419th Fighter Wing’s director of psychological health, said there are numerous resources available online – from exercise tips to virtual tours to finding productive ways to fill the time during social distancing. She offered a few trusted websites geared toward resilience, family resources, and mental and spiritual health.

Importance of Mental Health Q&A

Between rising COVID-19 concerns nationwide, many factors can affect a person's mental health. Maintaining a positive state of mind during this time can be difficult, but there are many resources available to help. Leaders from the 97th Medical Group at Altus AFB, Oklahoma, answered some common questions.

Free mental health available through COVID-19 Resource Hub

The nation’s leading mental health advocacy groups, healthcare insurance companies, and the Department of Veterans Affairs announced the launch of the COVID-19 Mental Health Resource Hub, which includes free digital resources to address mental health needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Talking to children about COVID-19

Communication is critical to help children feel safe and secure. Dr. Stephen Cozza, retired Army colonel and senior scientist at Uniformed Services University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, offers tips on how to speak to children about the coronavirus.

Mobile apps for Utahns and veterans

The SafeUT app is a statewide service that provides real-time crisis intervention to youth through live chat, or refer users to a therapist. Veteran Affairs has also endorsed the use of PTSD Coach.

Resources for meditation, mindfulness

Gossett recommends various meditation and stress-reducing mindfulness techniques. There are numerus mediation apps available, such as audio resources and guided meditations, and Gossett said people can utilize internet searches to find routines that fit their personal preference.
