Public Affairs recently sat down with Master Sgt. Karine Machado, wing career advisor in the 419th Military Personnel Flight, as part of its In Focus series, which shines the spotlight on the 419th Fighter Wing's outstanding Citizen Airmen.

What are the responsibilities of your job?

I provide Airmen information to help make decisions about their Air Force careers. Often they're not aware of the opportunities available to them. Informed Airmen will be more willing to re-enlist and continue their Air Force careers. If I can assist them with their career needs it also benefits the Air Force Reserve. It is truly a win for everyone involved.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

I have an open door policy and I am always available, but it is challenging to make contact with every member of the wing. I want every member of the wing to feel appreciated for what they do. They are an important part of the wing and an integral part of the Air Force Reserve.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

Providing a monetary bonus and retaining a key member of the 419th Fighter Wing is a great feeling.

What is your civilian job?

I am an Air Reserve Technician so I do the same job during the week. I do have a second career as a wellness counselor - a holistic practitioner that uses plants for healing and wellness. I am able to help people balance their body with plants and herbs, and reduce their dependence on pharmaceuticals.

Who is the most influential person in your life, why?

My mom. She taught me to always reach out to others from my heart.

What do you enjoy doing for recreation?

I like to exercise and I also enjoy hiking and reading.

Where can we find you on a Friday night?

Working as a wellness counselor and spending time with my family and friends.

What are you currently reading?

I am reading New Moon, a book in the Twilight series.

What are you currently listening to?

I really like dance and techno music. Artists that I enjoy include ATB and Enigma.

What is your favorite movie?

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" or "What Dreams May Come." I really like movies that make you think.

What is your favorite sport/team?

Rhythmic gymnastics is my favorite sport to watch. I participated in this sport in Portugal where I grew up.

So you grew up in Portugal?

Yes, I lived in Lisbon for 13 years. My parents are first generation immigrants to the United States. My father is Portuguese and my mother is French. Growing up I actually learned to speak Portuguese, French and English.

What is your favorite way to relax?

I enjoy yoga, meditation and reading. I like the mind and body connection that I can achieve. I feel that I can focus my energy and reenergize and center my body.
