HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Airmen in the 67th Aerial Port Squadron are experts when it comes to cargo — from building pallets to loading military vehicles onto aircraft. But today they made a special delivery, loading their cars with gifts for students with special needs.

Continuing a nearly 30-year tradition, reservists held a Christmas party for the special-needs class at Mound Fort Junior High School in Ogden. The holiday extravaganza included gifts, treats, and a meet-and-greet with Santa and his sugar-loving sidekick, Buddy the Elf.

“I love doing this,” said Master Sgt. Daron Nelson, who played Buddy. “It’s the feeling you get, seeing the kids light up and being a part of that. These are the most deserving kids.”

The 67th APS delivered boxes of toys, clothes, and hygiene items using funds they collected throughout the year. Each box was tailor-made for the students based on their wish lists.

“I love seeing the joy on their faces when they open their presents” said Tech. Sgt. Sara Kunze. "I needed that in my life this year, some of that Christmas spirit.”

Kunze said it's her second year participating in the party, which both Airmen and students have grown to cherish.

Teacher Tami Youngman, who has taught the class for 24 years, said the annual party is a great way to have fun and provide for the children’s needs, such as winter coats, but it’s also a way to break down barriers.

“A lot of the population has limited interaction with persons with disabilities,” she said. "My kids benefit from this experience every year, but so do the Airmen.”
