As an air freight journeyman with the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, Senior Airman Brian Seward ensures cargo is properly loaded onto aircraft. His job is a little more difficult lately after breaking his leg on the job as a civilian police officer with the Roy Police Department. I recently sat down with Seward to learn more about him.

How did you injure your leg?
I was on patrol in January when we got a call stating that a 21-year-old male was drunk, not taking his medication and was beating his girlfriend. I put him in handcuffs and as I was walking him to the car he tried to get away. In the struggle, we both fell to the ground and I landed on my leg, breaking it. He didn't get away and is now facing multiple charges. I had to use a scooter to get around for a few months and now I'll be in a boot for a couple weeks, then hopefully I'll be back to normal.

Tell me more about your job as a police officer.
I've been with the police department for 17 years. I started off patrolling then became a Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer. I was actually named the Utah State D.A.R.E. officer of the year for 2006. After that, I moved into the K-9 unit, but my dog just retired in December so I'm now back to patrol.

What led you to the Air Force Reserve?
I was actually in the Army for six years then I got smart and joined the Air Force. My favorite part of the Reserve is getting to travel. If they're going to pay to send me here and there to do my job, why not do it? I've traveled to California, Georgia, Florida, and I'll be going to Alaska for the first time.

Why is your job relevant in the 67th APS?
It's relevant because we're the ones moving stuff. Cargo has to get to where it's going, and that's what we do. We move stuff, and we do it well.

Now that you're injured, what do you do during the monthly UTAs?
I can't go on the flightline, so I help out with training; I basically do whatever anyone needs. I even mopped the floor last UTA.
