With Labor Day weekend on the horizon, some members may have adventurous plans for their time off. While a break is well deserved, Air Force leadership and the 419th Safety Office want Airmen to be safe.

Air Force leadership announced that more than 40 Airmen have died in off-duty mishaps this year across the entire Air Force, including 27 Airmen killed in motor vehicle accidents. The 419th Safety Office reported zero fatalities across the Reserve this summer.

Tech. Sgt. Jenipher Sears, from the 419th Safety Office, is in charge of keeping every Airman in the wing safe by making sure there are no safety hazards in the workplace and helping to eliminate preventable accidents. She said there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a safe holiday.

"Always let someone know where you're going and when you're expected back; get plenty of rest prior to driving long distances; don't drink and operate any vehicle," Sears said. "And don't forget sunscreen, even if it's overcast, and especially if you're doing water activities."

The goal of the safety office is to have zero fatalities by educating Airmen on personal safety.

"The 101 Critical Days of Summer isn't over until we return to work on Tuesday," Sears said. "Let's all make it back safely."
