Lt. Col. Craig Rogers, the 419th Fighter Wing Chaplain, is set to retire this June after more than 25 years with the wing. He recently sat down with public affairs to talk about the one thing he knows best: spirituality.

What is a chaplain's role in a military organization?

Chaplains are here to represent the Holy. What that means is we try to help people live our country's motto, "In God We Trust." Our country allows us the freedom to choose our own understanding of the Creator and worship in whatever form we choose.

How can Airmen maintain balance in their family, military and spiritual life?

You need to find out what drives you. If you get back to the core of your being and trust in God, then that should help you keep your balance.

What chaplain services do you want people to be aware of?

Airmen can speak to us in a free setting. The chaplains offer privileged communication that provides confidentiality. We are like the vent on the teapot. We let people vent their frustrations so they don't boil over. We work to resolve problems and provide immediate counseling, but we also offer Airmen options for extended support through the base's resources and www.militaryonesource.com.

What is your tip for maintaining faith during troubled times?

Throughout our lives we have guides that lead us through unexpected challenges. We look to our spouses, our family and our military leaders as guides. We also look to chaplains for spiritual guidance. If we keep faith with the Creator and look to our guides for support, we should find the strength needed to overcome any challenge.

Why is it important for Airmen to be in touch with their spiritual side?

Readiness is at the heart of who we are in the Reserve, but during an honest evaluation of your readiness your spiritual needs may be neglected. Reservists and their families need to take stock of their spiritual needs and continue upholding their values. When Airmen keep a strong faith in God, country, and family it helps them through separations and uncertainty.
