Master Sgt. Teresa Lopes is NCOIC of the 419th Force Support Squadron's command support staff. She spends most of her time processing personnel orders, travel vouchers and security paperwork for the FSS, mission support group and other headquarters staff. This month the public affairs office followed the paper trail to Sergeant Lopes' desk for a Q&A session.

What drew you to the Air Force Reserve?

I am prior active duty. After a three-year break in service I realized there were things that I missed about the military and that there were still opportunities waiting for me.

What do you like the most about the 419th Fighter Wing?

Relationships. I have old friends that I have known for a while. Even though we are spread out, we still see each other here and there and say, "How's it going?" It's camaraderie. It's really like a second family to me.

What really makes you happy?

My 3-year-old son, Gabriel. When I get home, I give him a big hug and he hugs me back and tells me he loves me. It's nice to have somebody that fills my whole world. I like to read with him, help him build things with his Legos. He loves to be outside, so I take him out as often as possible. Sometimes, just sitting with him and watching one of his favorite movies is just awesome for me.

What other interests do you have?

I love to cook. I have been cooking since I was very young and I enjoy experimenting. I like to read. Right now, one of my favorite authors is Nicholas Sparks. Another thing that I really love is Polynesian dance.

What is your experience with Polynesian dance?

My dad is from Hawaii, and I grew up with the Polynesian culture. I've always admired Polynesian dancing because of the stories that can be told just from body movement and what the dancing reflects. I've performed with a group called "lli O'Polynesia." We performed for the 419th Family Day several years ago.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

The neglect and abuse of children. I love my son so much. I just can't stand the thought of anything bad ever happening to him or any other children.
