At some time in their lives, most people have experienced financial stress. To help, the 419th Fighter Wing's Family Readiness office is sponsoring a class entitled "Financial Readiness for Today and Tomorrow." The class will be held Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the 419th Mission Support Group conference room on the second floor of Bldg. 180.

Ms. Delight Dehorty, 419th Family Readiness office, will teach the class. She has 13 years of financial experience.

Ms. Dehorty says she learned about finances the hard way and is now looking forward to sharing her hard-earned financial savvy with wing personnel.

"My parents never taught me how to balance a checkbook, so I learned about finances through trial and error," Ms. Dehorty said. "If I can help young Airmen, newly out on their own, and military families, then that would be great."

Ms. Dehorty hopes to help 419th reservists take charge of their finances so they can focus on their other obligations, including their family, civilian career and military service.

"Success with money is simply determined by your ability to manage and eliminate your debts, accumulate savings, and have your savings work as hard as you do," said Master Sgt. William Lee, 419th Family Readiness NCOIC. "For this to happen we need to develop a budget so we can see what's happening with our finances, and this class will help do that."

Attendees can expect to cover topics on determining net worth, how to set up a budget, and successful money management.

Sergeant Lee said managing finances can be difficult in any household, but can be especially difficult for military members, as deployments may separate families for extended periods of time.

The class will also give insight on why communication and compromise between spouses is crucial to reducing tension associated with financial matters.

"Know why you're doing it," Sergeant Lee said. "What is the end goal? Then be honest with yourself and be realistic so you can develop the discipline to stay within your spending limits. Don't make your budget too tight, and get everyone at home on board."

Ms. Dehorty also urges Airmen to check www.militaryonesource.com for more finance tips, or visit the Airman and Family Readiness Center for one-on-one financial counseling.

Reservists may call Sergeant Lee at 777-9390 to reserve a seat in the "Financial Readiness for Today and Tomorrow" class.
