On UTA, brush up on Post-9/11 GI Bill Published Jan. 8, 2010 By Public Affairs staff 419th Fighter Wing HILL AIR FORCE BASE, UTAH -- The 419th Fighter Wing's Education and Training office will brief the new Post-9/11 GI Bill Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bldg. 430. The Post-9/11 GI Bill took effect Aug. 1, 2009 and provides improved financial support for education and housing. To qualify, members must have served 90 days aggregate service on or after Sep. 11, 2001. Since then, about 60 reservists in the 419th FW have applied to transfer benefits to their family members - one of the key features of the new and improved bill. Even so, many more members are eligible for benefits, said Master Sgt. Marites Ramoneda-Thomas, the wing's Chief of Education and Training. The Education and Training office has held Post-9/11 GI Bill briefings every UTA since August, with one exception, in an effort to raise awareness of the bill's new education options. "About 400 members have attended the briefings, which is only one-third of the 419th FW population," Sergeant Ramoneda-Thomas said. The amount of support that individuals may qualify for depends on where the school is located and what type of degree they are pursuing. Approved training under the new bill includes graduate and undergraduate degrees, and vocational/technical training. The bill pays tuition based upon the highest in-state tuition charged by an educational institution in the state where it is located.
