IN FOCUS: Ms. Janet Candelaria Published July 10, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Heather Skinkle 419th Public Affairs HILL AIR FORCE BASE, UTAH -- -- Public Affairs recently sat down with Ms. Janet Candelaria, a budget analyst with the 419th Finance Office, as part of our 'In Focus' series, which shines the spotlight on outstanding personnel. Q: What are your primary job responsibilities? A: "I manage funding for pay and travel. Managing is a good word for what I do. I put together about 10 reports at the end of the month, some for my personal organization and others go up to the weekly staff meeting. There are quarterly reports, end of month reports, and unpaid open obligation reports." Q: What are the most challenging aspects of your job? A: "I started this job in November, so this is my first year. Right now I am learning how to be prepared instead of putting out fires. You get through something once and you will be prepared the following year." Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? A: "Seeing that people are paid is the most rewarding aspect of my job. The bottom line is being there for the member." Q: Who is the most influential person in your life and why? A: "My grandmother, at 90 she lived on a farm in Illinois and mowed her own yard. She knew how to do everything, from gardening, baking, and quilting. She had a gentle personality also." Q: What do you do for recreation? A: "I ride a motorcycle, a 750 Honda Shadow. I also mountain bike, play tennis, camp, and quilt." Q: What are you currently reading? A: "'The Question behind the Question' by John G. Miller. The book looks at questions you don't ask yourself. It's about personal accountability. Instead of asking 'why is this person not doing this?' Instead of assigning blame it puts it back to you. What could I have done to make it better?" Q: What is your favorite movie? A: "'There's something about Mary' It's hilarious. It is romantic mush but it's got good humor." Q: What is your favorite sport/team? A: "The Raiders because I married into it." Q: If you won $5 million how would you spend it? A: "First, I would pay off our motorcycle loans. Second, I would assist my girls with their college fees and I would set up a college fund for the grandkids. I would only allow it to pay for half of the tuition costs because I feel they will learn more by having to work a bit harder than by having it handed to them. I would also purchase a senior health care program so my kids don't have to worry about me. I would give some cash to people who have struggled. The rest would be invested for our retirement."
