The 419th Fighter Wing named Washington Heights Church its civilian Employer of the Year during an awards ceremony here Feb. 6, 2022. Pastor Roy Gruber accepted the award on behalf of the church.

Washington Heights Church is a staple in the community surrounding Hill AFB, supporting reservists under their employ and making generous accommodations for drill weekends, TDYs, and annual tours, the two-week training period required for reservists each year.

“Without the support of our employers, there’s no way we’re going to be able to come here and do our jobs,” said Col. Matthew Fritz, 419th FW commander. “You are vital, absolutely vital to the support of the security of our nation, just like everybody wearing the uniform.”

Washington Heights Church assembled and sent more than 100 care packages to deployed Airmen and provided support to their families at home. They also operate “God’s Garage,” which provides various auto services to widows, single mothers, and military spouses. In addition, the church offers opportunities for military veterans’ care and growth, to include support groups, recovery programs, grief counseling, and various classes.

Past winners of the 419th Employer of the Year include Zions Bank, Delta Air Lines, UPS, Salt Lake City Police Department, Utah Military Academy, and West Valley City.
