HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Members of the 419th Civil Engineer Squadron participated in combative defense training at Hill Air Force Base, Utah Sept 7, 2024.
The training was designed to help Airmen develop skills in self-defense, physical fitness, and confidence in combative skills.
“The more that we can be prepared for any sort of environment is helpful to keep yourself safe,” said Staff Sgt Codie Braegger, 419th Emergency Management training NCO in charge who designed and taught the training.
Braegger is trained in multiple martial arts and has taught combative defense courses to law enforcement personnel across the country and military throughout all branches.
Airmen from 419th CE and other Wing squadrons that participated in the combative defense course taught by Braegger gained more than just self-defense skills.
“There’s security benefits, but there’s also a fitness aspect,” said Braegger. “It’s a good workout and a stress relief.”
Amidst the sweat and strains of effort, the airmen also exchanged smiles and laughter. Airmen used pads and training weapons to spar together, practicing offensive and defensive maneuvers.
Airman 1st Class Christian Devinger, 419th Power Production specialist, said that even though his career field is less combat-oriented, he found it valuable to receive the training.
“It was cool to get to spar with the other guys in the shop and I got some practical skills to manage situations effectively,” said Devinger.
Continuous training helps Reserve Airmen maintain readiness to answer our nation’s call anytime, anywhere.
The 419th Fighter Wing is made up of nearly 1,300 personnel. The wing offers a diverse range of combat capabilities to include F-35 operations and maintenance, as well as full-spectrum mission support such as civil engineering, security forces, medical, aerial port, firefighting, supply, and transportation.
