Staff Sgt. Zachary Stevens is a fire team leader in the 419th Security Forces Squadron. He maintains readiness standards for SFS deployments, which includes clearing buildings and staying proficient on weapons. As a civilian, he's a full-time tax compliance officer with the IRS and is in the process of reinstating his real estate license.

Why did you join the Air Force Reserve?

I joined the Reserve because I wanted to do something more with my life. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. The Reserve also gives me the opportunity to travel, meet new people, and support my country.

How many deployments have you been on?

I've deployed to three locations in Southwest Asia. I liked Iraq because of the people I met and the connections I still keep with the people I deployed with. During other deployments, I was able to go out in the city and experience the culture. I got to eat Middle Eastern food and sightsee on my days off. I really like to interact with different cultures and learn some of their customs.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

My friend told me, "You just need to make a goal and not worry about the 'how.' When you move toward your goal, the 'how' will work itself out." I'm currently applying this to my life by working toward owning a business, reaching my personal fitness goals, and striving to become as successful as possible.

What's one of your favorite hobbies?

I love going to the gym. Bodybuilding is a passion of mine, and I'm currently weightlifting six times a week. The feeling you get when weightlifting is amazing and like none other. I started weightlifting in high school, and now I'm looking forward to doing a show in the next couple months.
