Col. Walter “Buck” Sams, 419th Fighter Wing commander, performs a preflight inspection on an F-16 Dec. 6. Colonel Sams was crew chief for a day during the December unit training assembly, which required hours of training the week prior to the launch. With assistance from Tech. Sgt. Wendy Baumgardner, 419th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, Colonel Sams performed all the tasks that crew chiefs carry out to ensure aircraft take off and land safely –from meeting with the pilot beforehand to checking the cockpit for foreign objects afterward. “He seemed to really enjoy himself,” Sergeant Baumgardner said. “He was excited to be out there with us in the cold launching a jet.” (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Nathan Greer)
